How
DFSS leverages E2ks…
Design
for Six Sigma (DFSS) is a Knowledge Building methodology. DFSS
focuses the engineer and engineering manager on…
-
Understanding
what the customer wants,
-
Creating
a design that meets the customers requirements and
needs,
-
Addressing
the variation affect of both the design (specifically, the
control factors) and uncontrolled factors (like environment or
manufacturing) on the design function and performance, and
-
Making
the design insensitive to variation and balancing interactions
to ensure the customer gets what they want every time.
Having spent time, money, and resources understanding
what really makes
a design work and then making the design insensitive to variation
and balancing interactions, there are two important DFSS tasks that
must not be overlooked. These tasks ensure the highest possible return
on
DFSS investment. The first task is to capture the new learnings
including all of supporting data and information in a structured,
reusable and managed form. In so doing, what has been learned is
readily available and will not needlessly be rediscovered in the
future. The second task is to bind each Control Factor rule (key
design parameter controlling the desired performance) with the
appropriate math data (CAD) design parameter. The second task
provides for continuous assessment of compliance to the DFSS
developed rules, a repeated return on the initial DFSS project
investment. It is these two value generating DFSS tasks that are
uniquely supported by E2ks. With E2ks, Key DFSS learnings are
managed, distributed and assessed within new engineering contexts
while individual Control Factors can be dynamically connected to
applications and monitored in real-time.
What
is Design for Six Sigma? DFSS is an engineering methodology that
identifies key design parameters that control the desired design
performance the customer cares about. The methodology also considers
the affect of variation of both the design and uncontrolled factors
on the desired performance and the subsequent variation of desired
performance on the customer perception and satisfaction.
What
is Six Sigma? A six sigma quality process improves capability of
business and manufacturing processes by detecting and eliminating
defects. The process capability is controlled within + 6 sigma
control limits or 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO).
Without DFSS, a manufacturer may achieve capable processes only to
produce an error-free product that performs in manner that the
customer does not care about.
